They really love the outdoors and also enjoying all of nature. Then there are also other people in this world who actually hate the outdoors. They would much rather enjoy the comforts of a home. These kinds of folks are generally called city slickers. Well in this article we are going to discuss in details some of the effective ways that a city slicker can still enjoy camping.

First of all the best way is to go and get an RV rental. RV rentals are absolutely great basically because you can really go camping and enjoy all the comforts of home. You can enjoy a nice soft bed with a TV if you like. Plus an RV will also have plenty supply of running water, a toilet and shower, along with a refrigerator. In other words they can still enjoy the outdoors while still having all of the comforts of the 20th century.

Another good way that you can enjoy the outdoors for that type of person is perhaps by renting a cabin. This is actually for people who still won't be really satisfied with an RV. By renting a cabin, although technically do not exactly appear like camping, you still enjoy nature. You can still go to a great outdoors site and still enjoy all of nature. That is one of the biggest benefit to my Campland on the Bay RV rentals.

Well they probably won't enjoy some fun things like hiking once you get them out to the great outdoors. So you could probably do other activities. You could absolutely go swimming or boating especially if there is a lake. If they like fishing you can take them out to the lake to catch some fish. All of these are definitely great activities for them to enjoy.

Finally, another great activity if they don't like hiking is actually to take a mountain bike and go explore the woods. Of course you might not be able to get to every place that you could walking, but it is still fun.

So there you have some of the effective and perfect ways in order that you can get a city slicker to enjoy the outdoors. It isn't exactly camping at times, but certainly, you will still enjoy to the fullest most of the things you do when camping. - 29761

About the Author:

Find some great rates on RV rentals at Carlsbad RV rentals. But it seems like with winter vacations, families aren't as creative. But that is definitely a shame simply because there are a lot of wonderful things that you can actually do in the winter as a family. Most of these things will go well if you have an RV that you can use to travel.

Well, going camping in the snow is actually the first good thing that a family can do. Normally, it would really be a bad idea to eventually set up a tent and then go camping in the snow. But if you were to take an RV with you to the snow it opens up a lot of possibilities. You can actually chose to go to many campgrounds and then surely save a lot of money when you don't have to rent a place to stay. This is a very popular option for clients of my San Diego RV rentals service.

Plus it truly gives you so many thrilling options if you were to go to some nice snow spots with a trailer. In other words, you really don't have to get stuck at one part of a mountain or ski resort to really enjoy these things. You could possibly move around and see the many parts of that resort. This is something my customers of my Campland on the Bay RV rentals business tell me they do all the time.

Going on a possible cross country trip is definitely another good thing you can do in the winter with an RV. You could definitely do this in the summer of course. But if you happen to take one to different parts of the country, it could really be a wonderful experience. So in order for you and your family to have a change of scenery, you could travel to a different climate then where you live.

Finally you could even chose to go fishing. One of those activities that never gets old fishing. It does not actually matter if it is a winter or summer season, you are sure to have a really great time. With an RV, it definitely makes it even more fun and convenient. So you could absolutely turn it into a weekend of fishing rather than having just a day of fishing.

So there are actually some great ideas in order for you to consider if you plan on taking a winter vacation. It is very sure to provide you and your family many wonderful and great moments together. - 29761

About the Author:

The best deals on RV's are found right here with Carlsbad RV rentals. So we are going to share some ways, in this article, to go on vacation and yet save money.

First way people can save money when they want to go on vacations is to go camping. This kind of camping can actually be in an RV or you can set up camp with a tent. Simply because camping takes care of a couple of expensive things, that is the main reason why you can definitely save money by going camping.

The hotels where you stay in is definitely the first thing that is very expensive when you go on a vacation. That is one of the benefits people always mention when they rent from my San Diego RV Rentals.

Another reason camping will save you money is because the next big expense on vacations is food. Well if you actually go camping, usually you are really packing your own food. Especially when you go with RV rentals, it can still be wonderful tasting food. With an RV you will definitely have a complete kitchen to work with and cool enough, you have a refrigerator to store food. Once in the field, US Soldiers found this cord useful for many other tasks. It is now used as a general purpose utility cord by both military personnel and civilians who recognise the unique construction of the paracord.

So how is paracord made? It's a complex interwoven braided sheath that has a high number of strands for its size and smooth texture. Due to this paracord, is used for a number of purposes including fashion, survival kits and of course parachutes. This has led to manufacturing in both civilian and military purposes.

Within bush craft and survival communities paracord has reached an almost iconic status where it is considered that its uses are only limited by a person's imagination to use it. Take the second Space Shuttle mission in February 1997 for example... A bright and resourceful astronaut decided the best way to repair the Hubble Space Telescope was with the outer sheath of a length of paracord.

Despite the historic association of paracord with Airborne units, virtually all US units have access to the cord. It is used in almost any situation where a light cord is needed. Typical uses include attaching equipment to harnesses, as lanyard cords to avoid losing small or important items, tying rucksacks to vehicle racks, securing camouflage nets to trees or vehicles, and so forth. When threaded with beads, paracord may be used as a pace counter to estimate ground covered by foot. Melt the ends of paracord with a heated knife or naked flame and they can be joined together.

Six styles of paracord are commonly supplied all conforming to the Military standard of MIL-C-5040H. These are listed as Type 1, Type 1A, Type 2, Type 2A Type 3 and Type 4. The most widely used paracord in circulation today is Type 3 paracord due to its versatility. Type 3 paracord will have a minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds. This breaking strength led to the abreviated name which oftern paracord is referred to. 550 Cord. Paracord / 550 cord can be manufactured to any diameter as there are no specific requirements within MIL-C-5040H. - 29761

About the Author:

Learn more about Paracord Survival Bracelets. You can hike to a peaceful waterfall and stay there for some much desired rest and relaxation. Or, you can go up to the very summit of a mountain and conquer the tall peaks. Basing on the type of trip you prefer, there are particular hiking equipments that you will need to bring with you.

Clothes

Many people ponder about what kind of clothes they should use for a hiking trip. When, actually, the answer is pretty simple. Those things that you have on your cabinet should be more than sufficient. Make sure, however, that you choose practical clothes. When people think of hiking, they automatically think that it's better to use shorts and tank tops. Actually, it is much better to use pants and long-sleeved shirts as they will serve you better through different kinds of weather. Do not forget that the sun gets hotter as the day nears noon. You might grossly underestimate the heat, especially if you start out early in the morning where the weather is cool and damp. In cases like these, long-sleeved shirts will really provide more protection from the sun. Also, if you have some cash to spare, you could buy those vests with several pockets. The more pockets you have, the more items you can bring; like matches, a compass, a telescope, a small first aid kit, your canteen, etc. You should keep the vital items close to your person at all times in case you lose your bag somewhere along the way.

Footwear

You will also require specialized footwear. Your feet are going to be the ones that will take a beating from the long hikes, so you need them to be as comfortable and as strong as possible. Footwear will also help you move through different kinds of terrain. A good advice is to use water-proof footwear, as you might have to wade through streams when hiking.

Backpack

Backpacks are an absolute must for hiking. This is where you'll keep your sleeping bag, your extra clothes, and also your tent. It is important, therefore, that you pick the right bag. Find one with several pockets where you can place your things. Another very important factor that you have to consider when it comes to choosing a backpack is durability. You wouldn't want your bag to tear while you're hiking. So, when it comes to the bag, don't hesitate to spend a bit of extra cash. - 29761

About the Author:

Karen Dreyer discuss hiking equipment on her homepage. The memories of summer camp are reminders of experiences with a lifetime's worth of value.

Few places on earth can provide a child with opportunities for never ending daily fun the way the best camps can. All of that great fun would be reason enough for anyone to want to be at an overnight camp, but summer camp offers much more to a child's life, whether it's a nature camp or animal camp or a science camp or a nonspecific resident camp.

Healthy physical exercise is a natural part of everyday life for a camper. Camp activities and interaction with nature provide exercise for the camper's intellect and imagination as well.

Summer camp offers a wonderful chance for kids to learn the skills of social interaction in a more creative and independent way than school settings allow. Guided by capable adult friends and role models called counselors, campers get an independent chance to apply what they have been taught at home in a larger world. If a summer camp is a coed camp, there is even more opportunity for kids to learn how to relate with members of the other gender as friends and equals.

Campers grow to find and be themselves, in a natural setting that gently challenges a child to newer and higher standards for their own behavior. The kids camp daily context is activities that encourage perseverance, listening skills, teamwork, and the ability to recognize similarities and appreciate differences in each individual. If it's a nature camp or an animals camp, kids get even more opportunities to relate with the creatures of the natural worlds around us. Self discovery can become a habit that lasts a lifetime.

Summer camp is a new chance to rediscover a growing life. Sleep-away camp is an opportunity for each child to come to a new place and try new things and make new friends. Everyone starts as an equal with a chance to just be oneself around others. Many unique designs and interpretation are made today and similar to any product today the quality of the product will vary. US military specification paracord is widely considered the best quality paracord on the market. This reputation has been achieved largely due to the fact that American manufacturers conform to design specifications defined by the US military (MIL-C-5040). As you can see if you have a paracord survival bracelet on your wrist and you find yourself in a situation that requires some light cordage simply unbraid the bracelet and you have one continuous foot piece of cord (upto 24 feet).

What would you ever use it for? Anything and everything. You're limited only by your imagination. Broken boot lace in the outback? The outer sheath makes excellent boot laces and will probably last longer than the originals that came with the boots. Need some quick thread? The inner strands make a great substitute. Need some lashing for a temporary shelter? Remove the inner strands and you have a suitable piece of cord! Need to fix the Space Shuttle (No not a joke, paracord was actually used to repair the Space Shuttle in 1997). It sounds extreme but it's great for replacing a broken gear straps on your kayak, making a field repair to your backpack or making an impromtu rope for a bear bag. The list is endless.

Paracord is without question one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can take to the field. It's light, it's convenient and it's super tough. The sheath is braided from thirty two (32) strands and the inner strands are made up of seven (7) two-ply yarns. Paracord survival bracelets are in use by security forces in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as by law enforcement personnel across the USA.

Although the paracord bracelets share a common weave it is possible to create many different designs. Two colour, three and even four colours can be woven into a paracord bracelet with the choices of a buckle or knot(s) to secure around the wrist.

It's difficult to imagine creating a survival kit or planning an outdoor hike / trip without including paracord. The Paracord Survival Bracelet is one of the most versatile and useful ways to always be prepared! - 29761

About the Author:

Looking to find the best deal on Paracord Survival Bracelets, then visit www.paracordbracelet.co.uk to find the best advice onParacord Survival Bracelets for you.

Camping Tent

By Karen Dreyer

If you ever find yourself getting bogged down by the mundane activities of everyday life, why don't you pack your belongings and go camping? There's really nothing more exciting than to sleep in the woods, with only a flimsy tent as your defense against the elements. It's a great way to cleanse yourself, to forget the stresses of the draining city life at least for a while. But camping itself is not an easy feat. There are several things that you must put into consideration, especially in taking care of your camping tent.

Always Choose "Practical"

Most of the time, the best tents are also the ones that are least aesthetically pleasing. But truly, when you go camping, I can assure you that beauty is the last thing you'll be looking for. You will prefer a tent that is large enough to keep you and your friends. Spacious tents are especially useful if you have a lot of things with you, as you can't just leave your things outside while you sleep within your tent. Also, go for the tent that's simple to set up, no matter how boring or ugly it looks. Believe me, once you arrive at your camping site, you'll want nothing more than to just rest. And the fact that you will have a fancy tent to set up will dampen your spirits.

Accessorize It

Another matter that will aid you if you decide to go camping is to accessorize your camping tent. Purchase some inflatable mattresses or some sleeping bags so that you'll be more comfortable in the evenings. The tent might give you warmth, but it won't make you any more comfortable without a mattress.

Anti-Mosquito

One of the worst things about camping is the presence of mosquitoes. You can be sure that they will bother you when you go camping. And really, they can destroy your camping trip thoroughly if you let them. There is a way to keep them out, however, and that is to spray your tent with insecticide. The smell will keep these pests out.

Location is Everything

Another thing that you have to take into consideration is the location where you put your tent. It's best if you put your tent at higher ground in case it rains. Furthermore, if it does rain, be sure to let your tent dry before packing it so that it doesn't get mildew. Also, be sure that you don't place your tent too close to the fire. You can never be sure that the wind will pick up and send a few embers over to your tent, causing a disastrous fire. Camping trips are very fun, especially if you're going with your friends. If you ever plan to make your mark on Mother Earth, then you might want to conquer a high peak and hike to the very summit of a mountain. Well, if such is your decision, then it's probably good for you to make the right preparations first. Make sure that you have all the right hiking gear before you go so that you won't find yourself wanting once you start on your journey hike. To begin with, here is a list of the most basic materials you will need on your hike.

Tent

One of the things that is extremely important when going hiking is a tent. You cannot go on a lengthy hike without taking some shelter along. There are, though, many kinds of tents and you might be in a dilemma as to picking which one to buy. The choice actually hinges on your specific needs. One thing is for sure, though, you need to pick the one that is lightweight. Hiking is no easy feat. And if you want to endure, then your pack must be easy enough to carry.

Sleeping Bags

Another thing you have to think about is how and where you will sleep. And for this, you will need a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags may either be made of down or made of synthetic fibers. Both are great insulators, but if you are a serious camper, then it would surely be best if you get a down sleeping bag. Down sleeping bags are better than the synthetic ones in almost all aspects. They will be more useful in the long run, despite their high price.

Insect Repellent

One item that you should never ever forget when assembling your hiking gear is insect repellent. Because we live in the city, it is easy to underestimate the insects in the jungle. But once you get there, you will see exactly how big and how dangerous these bugs are.

Safety Gear

Safety Gear are also very important when it comes to hiking. When setting up your hiking gear, be sure to bring along some safety matches, a flashlight, and some hiking poles. These will make your trip much easier and much safer. You must also bring along a first aid kit just in case someone gets injured. - 29761

About the Author:

Mrs. Karen D. writes about hiking gear on her site. No other activity would offer you such a complete knowledge of the land. You surely should try it someday. However, before you set out on your adventure, be sure that you have the most crucial item for backpacking. What is it, you inquire? Easy: A Backpack. Picking a backpack, however, is not a simple matter of simply just picking the cheapest or even choosing the one you think is aesthetically pleasing. Beauty has little to do with backpacking. It is practicality that is most crucial. As such, here are the factors that you have to take note of when you purchase your backpack.

Number of Pockets

Pockets make it much simpler for you to find an item quickly, especially if your things are well organized. With pockets, you won't have to search around in your bag, trying to find a particular item. They're ideal for smaller items like matches, cell phones, and cameras -- those things that you usually need more often than other equipment and you thus need easier access to whenever you go backpacking. When you purchase your backpack, be sure that it has a sufficient amount of pockets for all your most important things.

Material

Another factor that is of utmost importance is the strength of your bag. Ensure the material is sturdy so that the bag will last long and won't tear while you're on your backpacking trip. Some low quality bags have cloths that are easily destroyed with the wear and tear of traveling. The cloth becomes thinner and thinner and before you know it, it will burst at the worst moment and your belongings will come spilling out. For that matter, you should take along some thread and a needle whenever you go backpacking as a safety measure. People often forget these thing, only to regret it later. Furthermore, you should make sure that your backpack is waterproof. Should you encounter rain when you go backpacking, it would be of prime importance that none of your items get wet.

Size

Backpacks are meant to be donned around the torso, so be sure the bag fits you. A backpack that is too large would be too awkward to carry around, and so would one that is too small. So, when you buy your bag, try it out first and check if it's the right size for you. - 29761

About the Author:

Karen D. writes about backpacking recipes on her website. Commercially marketed today, paracord has hundreds of uses often not initially thought of. Manufacturing of Paracord first started in World War 2 and the design has remained unchanged today. The outer sheath is a filament nylon covering with seven high strength inner nylon cords. The combined breaking strength of a single piece of paracord is 550 pounds. The breaking strength of the cord can be increased during manufacturing but is not usually less than this unless otherwise specified.

More than just a parachute cord - Although paracord was designed for use as a suspension line for parachutes. This high strength cord has proven over the years to have a number of other uses. No camping / hiking or survival gear would be complete without a length of this highly versatile cord. Uses for paracord are endless. In places where the insulation had been worn away, Teflon patches were applied and secured with parachute cord. Many army units have fashioned parachute cord into bracelets denoting their unit and geographical area of deployment. This reflects both the comfortable texture of the nylon rope and its place as a military icon. - 29761

About the Author:

Learn more about Paracord Survival Bracelets. Certainly, if you camp out at an established campground, you might not need to be concerned about things such as a good camp shower tent. However, in the event that you are planning on camping in the wilds and won't have a camper or RV available, then there's actually no alternative but to make use of a tent specially created for showering.

Rivers, lakes and streams are not recommended for washing due to the possibility that chemicals in your soap and shampoo will wind up harming the wildlife in the region. On the other hand, a camp shower tent is a helpful item of camping gear that will guarantee increased privacy along with permitting you to have the benefit of washing up in a shower that is equivalent in performance and quality to what you would usually find in a house in the city.

Basically, a camp shower tent contains a bag that's filled with water and there is also a nozzle that is intended to serve as a shower head. You can purchase solar models that derive heat from sunlight, which is free and an easily accessible source of energy. It will get the water hot so you can experience a revitalizing shower.

There are also several good camp shower tents which can be operated by batteries or even by gas that will heat up the water adequately to ensure that you get a nice, energizing shower. Even if such shower tents cost more, they're also a great deal more handy and you'll get good value for the money invested. As well, the water will be heated a lot quicker than in the case of using a solar powered tent.

The shower is typically hung from the roof of the tent and there's a valve that can be opened to allow hot water to pour from a spout. The entire world is practically presented before you, just waiting to be explored. And what's even greater, no two places are exactly the same. It's a whole new experience with each destination. However, traveling can also be problematic, what with the planning you have to do before you go. It is, therefore, of grave importance that you pick the most proper travel bags before you go. You cannot take your whole house with you, after all. And all your comforts have to be packed into a suitcase. It is only right that this suitcase be the best for you.

So, to help you pick, be sure to consider these various factors:

Material

The travel bag's material is of extreme importance because this is what the bag's strength will be based on. Bags with metal frames may be the most durable of all, but they are also rather heavy. They will cost you some when you get them weighed at the airport and they will also be much weightier to lug around. There are materials today that are light and yet strong, so be sure to pick these. The bag's cloth type is also vital. Be sure that the cloth does not tear easily. If possible, find a bag that is water proof, as you don't want your belongings wet should you find yourself under the rain.

Features

You must also consider the bag's characteristics. If you usually go on long vacations, then it would be better for you to buy big bags with rollers so that you can accommodate more things and also find it easier to move from place to place. If you are merely going for a short trip or if you want to travel light, though, then a shoulder bag may be the best choice. Choose one with many pockets so that you can organize your things properly. Backpacks are also good, but they're mostly for informal trips. You very well can't use a backpack when you're on a business trip. Another feature that you should watch out for is the expandability of the bag. Some bags have hidden zippers that can be opened for expanded space so that you can pack more items. These bags are very practical, especially if your travel plans vary from time to time. - 29761

About the Author:

Mrs. Karen Dreyer discuss travel bags on her site. It is really fun when you decide that you are going to bring the whole family camping. There are a lot of things that can be done when you get to a campsite.

Probably the funnest part is just being able to enjoy your time and getting away from it all. So with this article let's go over a few things you can do together if you go camping.

First of all when you go camping probably the first thing you can enjoy doing is enjoying the hiking trails. You can have fun on the hiking trails a few different ways. Of course the whole family can be taken on a hike. Or if you really like to have some adventure, you can choose to go biking if they allow it on the trails. This is a great thing you can do. It is something I suggest all clients of my San Diego RV rentals service to do.

Another great activity that is available for you to do when camping is to go fishing. Of course the campground you choose is going to need to have fish in a lake. But if the camp site you choose does have one, fishing is going to be one of the best parts of the camping trip with the family. You can take the whole day if you wanted trying to catch fish. And with the trailers you can rent like the ones at my Campland on the Bay RV rentals service you can store all the fish you catch in the refrigerator.

Another fun thing to do is explore all the different camping locations within a campground. Of course doing this will not be as simple if you are camping the traditional way with gear and tents. That would be because you would have to pack up and move every time. But if you rent an RV like the ones in my RV rentals service it makes it easy to move.

So those are some fun things you can do when you go camping. As you can see if you decide to go camping with the family there are a lot of things you can do. - 29761

About the Author:

Find a huge selection of travel trailers and RVs at San Elijo RV rentals. No matter where you might be going, whether it's in the forest or up the mountain, you should ensure that you have a sleeping bag with you. Sleeping bags are not only providers of comfort, they serve a much more crucial purpose, and this is to give insulation. You'll be shocked at how cold it can get during the night when you're in the wild. Warmth becomes a very important commodity. And a sleeping bag with nice insulation may just become your best friend during the cold evenings. But there are two types of sleeping bags to pick from, one is the down sleeping bag and the other one has synthetic filling.

Down Sleeping Bags

As far as usefulness goes, most people prefer down sleeping bags. This type of bag is filled with goose feathers or, as it is called, goose down. It provides the best insulation as it traps air quite nicely. You can be sure that you'll have a warm and comfortable night if you have a down sleeping bag with you. Also, down sleeping bags are also rather light. Bringing them along would save you a lot of energy because of their low weight. They're quite compact and can be rolled quite tightly, which makes them easy to haul around. Indeed, for the camper, down sleeping bags have the most benefits, most especially if the location they're going to is in the mountains or in other cold areas.

Another good point about down sleeping bags is their good quality. Even if you keep them for years and years, as long as they don't get too worn, they will still serve their purpose of being wonderful insulators.

Perhaps, the biggest disadvantage of down sleeping bags is that they don't do well in places where the atmosphere is damp. Once the bag gets damp, it loses its power to insulate. So, if you can't keep your bag safe from water, it's best to use the other type.

Synthetic Sleeping Bags

Although weightier and bulkier than down sleeping bags, synthetic sleeping bags actually have their good points too. For one thing, their performance in wet climates is better than that of down's. Also, this type is hypoallergenic so they're best for people who are allergic to feathers. They're also much cheaper. So if price is a big consideration for you, then it's best to go with synthetic. - 29761

About the Author:

Before chooseing a down sleeping bag, you simply need to read Ron's recommendations on what to choose and what not to choose when it comes to down sleeping bags and sleeping bags liners.

The Backpacking Skills Checklist

By Ethan O. Tanner

A backpacking checklist is generally about the "stuff." Good equipment is pleasant to have, but even with the finest gear you can get into hassle in the wilderness. You might have catches and the most recent fire starters, but nevertheless not be able to get that fire going. It takes more than good gear to assure a safe and gratifying trip. Towards that end, then, this is a list of attainments you should have or learn.

Navigation is an substantial skill in the outdoors, they are more than just reading a compass or GPS. Contrary to what many beginners think, a compass does not assure you wherever you're. For that matter, a map does not either, if you do not have formula to apply it. Practice close to home if you can't yet use both of these easily. Do the same with your GPS unit.

Staying warm is an essential skill that not only involves the correct layered clothing, but also being prepared for the area you are backpacking in and the prevailing weather. There are tricks to staying warm. Shed layers as you get warm, for example, so you don't have sweat to chill you later. Use wind-blocking shell clothing, and wear a hat. Eating fatty foods before sleeping can keep you warmer.

Pitching a tent is a skill that requires a proper site along with basic skills and experience to erect it properly. Pitch your tent or tarp wrong and the rain will come in, or the wind will tear the seams. They need to be pitched tight, and you should be able to do it in a few minutes. Practice in the yard.

Cooking over a fire may seem easy but requires the proper fire, correct outdoor cooking gear, and basic cooking knowledge. Making soup over a small fire is not as easy as it seems. Cover the pan, block the wind, and keep the fire small and concentrated. Time yourself when you practice. You don't have to rush normally, but speed can be important in some situations, and it's always possible your stove will break.

Identifying edible plants will make your trip enjoyable and nutritional. Finding out to identify three or four wild edible berries can make a trip more pleasurable. Acquiring to distinguish cattails and one or two other good survival food plants can be very helpful, especially if you ever lose your food to a bear.

Walk at a well-fixed pace enables you to accomplish your destination in a reasonable time. If you pace yourself and study how to move advantageously over rocky terrain, you will be less tired, and less probable to twist an ankle. Fasten those laces, too.

Empathizing animals is an substantial skill as a Bear or mountain lion could truly destroy your outdoor experience. Is the bear "bluff charging" or stalking you? The latter means you will be the bear's supper if you play dead. A clue: making numerous noise usually means he just would like to frighten you (a "bluff charge"), but you need to read up on this one.

Weather observation is vital as a grievous storm would truly wreck your outdoor experience. Are those just clouds, or a lightning storm coming? It would be good to know when you are on a high ridge. In the rockies, afternoon thunderstorms are the norm in summer. Determine the weather patterns of an area, and the basics of forecasting weather, and you will be a lot safer.

Basic first aids is a crucial skill for survival in the outdoors. What are the symptoms of hypothermia? Bumbling and slurred speech are a couple of them. How do you decently treat blisters? You can use duct tape whenever you do not have moleskin. These and other fundamentals are beneficial things to recognize.

Fire making is perfectly vital for enjoyment and survival in the woods. Try to begin that fire with one match. As well try it the next time it's raining. Arrive the habit of accumulating dry tinder before the rain comes. Discover what things burn even when wet, like pine sap and birch bark .

This last one can represent among the more significant skills in an emergency. Experts can start a fire in almost any circumstances, but you don't need to be an expert in wilderness survival to enjoy a harmless hiking trip. For a safer, more gratifying trip, just do the best you can, and start checking the skills on this backpacking checklist. - 29761

About the Author:

Leather expert and knowledgeable Ethan O. Nature offers us so many chances for fun and adventure that we can live our whole lives and still, we'd never run out of activities to do and places to visit. And the best way to experience what the earth has to offer is to go hiking. Without any superfluities and any of those gratuitous comforts of modern living, we really get to experience nature first hand.

There are, however, some items that you absolutely cannot live without, such as a sleeping bag. You can't go backpacking if you don't have a down sleeping bag. After all, nature is a dangerous mistress. Sleeping under the stars can be one of the most gratifying activities on earth, but then, the cold can consume you and have you shivering in your sleep. Any adventure could take a turn for the worse. But still, that's no reason to stop going on adventures and exploring. What you must do is to prepare yourself and get all the things that are necessary, such as a down sleeping bag.

Advantages of Down Sleeping Bags

What's great about down sleeping bags is that, compared to the new artificial ones found in the market, they provide better insulation, and thus, more warmth. You'll be more comfortable at night, and also safest, if you are sleeping in a down sleeping bag. Goose feathers, which is really what "down" is, is one of the best insulators that nature has to offer.

Another reason why down sleeping bags are so wonderful is that, with proper handling, they can last for a very long period. Down sleeping bags are durable and hardy, and can withstand the wear and tear of traveling quite easily. Also, down sleeping bags are very light and very compact. This is a very important factor when you go hiking because you're going to need all the space and all the energy you can get. A down sleeping bag is simpler to bring along and it will also give you more space for grub, clothing, and other basic necessities.

Disadvantages of Down Sleeping Bags

The biggest shortcoming of down sleeping bags is cost. They can get quite expensive, especially the better quality ones. Also, some people can be allergic to goose down. They also don't work well in very moist areas. - 29761

About the Author:

Before you go and buy a down sleeping bag, you simply need to read Ron's advice on what to buy and what not to buy when it comes to down sleeping bags.

Sharpening Bowie Knives

By Dylan Sabot

Bowie knives are among the most versatile cutting tools ever conceived. That versatility means that they're put to many different tasks and, quite often, that the blade takes a beating. Even the highest quality steel can only hold an edge for so long. Learning how to sharpen a Bowie knife is a basic part of owning them.

There are several characteristics of Bowie knives that make sharpening them a tough job. They have long blades, which makes them unwieldy on a stone. They also have curved blades, which requires that the proper sharpening angle be maintained, for all intents and purposes, while turning a corner. The knives are also thick-bladed, which means they won't fit correctly in many all-in-one devices. Because these knives oftentimes are made of very fine steel, they deserve to be maintained with the correct tools and the correct technique.

Some devices allow users to hold their Bowie knife in a vertical position while they sharpen it. These devices usually have slots that hold the blade in the correct position. Some of the devices use a mechanical apparatus to grind away the metal instead of the user drawing the blade against a stone. These devices sometimes produce good results, sometimes not. There is enough variation in Bowie knife design that a device may work splendidly for one particular knife and not at all for another.

Many owners prefer to sharpen their knife by hand. This requires coordination and patience. Done improperly, it can ruin the edge on a Bowie knife as quickly as can a bad automatic sharpener. Done properly, many users argue that this manual method produces the best of all results. Some individuals simply like sharpening the blade manually as it more closely resembles the reality of how the original pioneers and fighters who used these weapons would have maintained their own blades.

If one opts for an all-in-one system to sharpen one's Bowie knife, some considerations must be made. First, the guides on the all-in-one system must be wide enough to accomodate the thick blade of the Bowie. If not, one may end up sharpening their blade at an improper angle and ruining their knife. The sharpener should also have high-quality abrasives that actually sharpen the blade. The device must remove the metal from the blade evenly and along the correct edge for proper results. - 29761

About the Author:

Dylan Sabot is the owner of an online bowie knives store featuring SOG bowie knives as well as humidors for storage.

Kids Do Not Need to Be Homesick

By Lonnie Lorenz

You don't have to be a camper, or a child to suffer from homesickness. When anyone is in a strange, new place, even if it is exciting and fun, it is normal to miss home. Separation anxiety is a normal part of childhood. It is developmentally appropriate, is evidence of the loving, trusting relationship you have built with your child. Because your child loves and trusts you, separation can be scary.

A Summer Camp provides separation followed by a reunion. Yet, emotionally, it can be difficult to accept especially for children. Early on while adjusting to a new environment and living with new folks, children can get overwhelmed and even scared. Kids who enjoy new adventures and love sleepovers with friends may experience homesickness but usually it is limited.

It is important that you don't measure your success as a parent by your child's adjustment to camp. Even if your child has a difficult time adjusting to camp, it does not mean that you have failed to create an independent child. It may be difficult to understand how hard your child finds the first few days at camp. At times, it's almost as if your child believes that he or she will never see you again. Put your child's reaction into context. She may not be looking for a logical response from you, rather, what she wants is comfort and reassurance.

Anxiety can cause the least rational reactions in children as well as adults. Homesickness is a temporary feeling that can over come with adult support. The benefits of overcomes homesickness are enormous It increases self-confidence and self esteem. Don't give up when you get that letter saying come pick me up I hate it here. Instead call the camp director and discuss how they might be able to help your child

Is it ever right to say that it isn't working and bring your child home? Sure, but you must make this decision with a great deal of thought and awareness of the long-term consequences. Campers who come home before the end of their stay often feel like failures. However, sometimes, even with the best of intentions and efforts on the parts of the parents and staff, a child is just not ready for camp or it's just not a good fit. If, after a real trial (a week is not to long), and the best efforts between home and camp your child is clearly not adjusting, it's time to bring the camper home.

Should you make the decision to go get your child, try and work it out with the camp director. Feelings of failure may arise so you need to support your child. Save the evaluation for a week or so after camp, when you sort out what went went wrong with the experience. Help your child to understand that even though the camp experience was disappointing, he is not a failure because things were learned. Assure let your child confidence in him and a different program may be better in the future.

Swift Nature Camp offers a unique Beginning Camper program that is designed only for first time camper. This program gives additional attention to each child. It works because during the 12 days it allows camper to move past homesickness and into self confidence. With a limited amount of campers and all campers at camp for their first time it sets a level playing feel for all children. If your child is reluctant to leave home look for a program that is only for first timers.

Picking a summer camp is not all that simple, Do the research at Summer Camp Advice, a FREE online guide for Summer Camp - 29761

About the Author:

Jeff and Lonnie Lorenz have been the owners & Directors of Swift Nature Camp since 1996. If you are parents to children this is an even more enjoyable times. Some of the times are going to be the best when you can do some recreational activities. In this article we are going to look at some fun things we can do as a family.

With our busy lives sometimes the only time we can really spend with each other as a family is the weekend. Camping is one of the best ways to really get some time together with your family. Camping offers you a method to get away and get some quality time with the family. One way that is really fun is to rent an RV and go camping with the family. That is the bulk of who makes up my customers in my San Diego RV rentals business.

The beach is the next fun way to spend time together with your family. You can make it even more enjoyable if you can camp out at the beach as well.

If you choose to go to the beach what you will want is to rent an RV also. A lot of the beaches are going to have places for you to go with an RV. This makes up the bulk of my rentals in the summer for my Campland on the Bay RV rentals business.

Another way to have a good time with family is to go on long trips with one another. Places that you would consider not far enough to have a need to take a plane, but just far enough that it doesn't make sense to take a car. That is the type of place that is perfect for an RV rental as well. Long trips are another big reason people rent from my RV rentals business.

So as you can see there are many fun ways to spend time together as a family. But some ways that are extremely fun to do is the times you are able to spend time together as a family. - 29761

About the Author:

Looking for great rates on a travel trailer or RV look at our Glamis RV rentals. There are distinguishing characteristics that make this knife what it is and which give it its characteristic durability, utility and, when necessary, lethality. This knife design is born of the American Frontier when people needed tools that were as versatile and durable as possible.

Bowie knives always have clipped points. This feature is the end part of the blade where the center of the blade dips below the spine. Though this feature is attractive, it offers far more than looks. In a fight, this narrow portion of the blade is lethal in its ability to penetrate deep into the body with little effort. This creates what is called a false edge along the back of the blade. Some users sharpen this edge. Outside of fighting, however, this modification has little practical usage and may make the knife more dangerous to the user.

Unlike most hunting knives, a Bowie knife has a wide and angled hand guard. This is also principally designed for its utility when fighting. The hand guard can deflect other weapons away from the user's hands-hands and arms are major targets in knife fights-and also prevents the user's hand from sliding up the blade if it meets heavy resistance from a thrust. As much as a Bowie is a tool of the frontier, it is also a weapon of war and its namesake owner was legendary for his skill with this particular weapon.

The Bowie knife always has a single edge. This is where it really blends a tool with a weapon. For obvious reasons, double-edges are preferred on many fighting knives. The single edge on a Bowie makes it more practical for the user and lends strength to the blade. The blade is also very thick and wide. In a camping situation, this makes it ideal for chopping and hacking.

Bowie knives are useful tools but, in many jurisdictions, they are illegal to carry. These knives, after all, are weapons and are designed to be lethal. Before heading out of the house with one's Bowie strapped to one's leg, check local laws to make sure carrying such a fearsome knife is legal. - 29761

About the Author:

Dylan Sabot is the owner of an online bowie knife store featuring Cold Steel bowie knives for sale as well as humidors for storage.

Tent Camping Facts And History

By Helen Injuter

Individuals have been camping in a tent ever since Biblical times.
