The History Of Paracord

Paracord also called 550 cord is a nylon kermantle rope originally used as suspension lines of US parachutes. Once in the field, US Soldiers found this cord useful for many other tasks. It is now used as a general purpose utility cord by both military personnel and civilians who recognise the unique construction of the paracord.

So how is paracord made? It's a complex interwoven braided sheath that has a high number of strands for its size and smooth texture. Due to this paracord, is used for a number of purposes including fashion, survival kits and of course parachutes. This has led to manufacturing in both civilian and military purposes.

Within bush craft and survival communities paracord has reached an almost iconic status where it is considered that its uses are only limited by a person's imagination to use it. Take the second Space Shuttle mission in February 1997 for example... A bright and resourceful astronaut decided the best way to repair the Hubble Space Telescope was with the outer sheath of a length of paracord.

Despite the historic association of paracord with Airborne units, virtually all US units have access to the cord. It is used in almost any situation where a light cord is needed. Typical uses include attaching equipment to harnesses, as lanyard cords to avoid losing small or important items, tying rucksacks to vehicle racks, securing camouflage nets to trees or vehicles, and so forth. When threaded with beads, paracord may be used as a pace counter to estimate ground covered by foot. Melt the ends of paracord with a heated knife or naked flame and they can be joined together.

Six styles of paracord are commonly supplied all conforming to the Military standard of MIL-C-5040H. These are listed as Type 1, Type 1A, Type 2, Type 2A Type 3 and Type 4. The most widely used paracord in circulation today is Type 3 paracord due to its versatility. Type 3 paracord will have a minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds. This breaking strength led to the abreviated name which oftern paracord is referred to. 550 Cord. Paracord / 550 cord can be manufactured to any diameter as there are no specific requirements within MIL-C-5040H. - 29761

You don't have to be a camper, or a child to suffer from homesickness. When anyone is in a strange, new place, even if it is exciting and fun, it is normal to miss home. Separation anxiety is a normal part of childhood. It is developmentally appropriate, is evidence of the loving, trusting relationship you have built with your child. Because your child loves and trusts you, separation can be scary.

A Summer Camp provides separation followed by a reunion. Yet, emotionally, it can be difficult to accept especially for children. Early on while adjusting to a new environment and living with new folks, children can get overwhelmed and even scared. Kids who enjoy new adventures and love sleepovers with friends may experience homesickness but usually it is limited.

It is important that you don't measure your success as a parent by your child's adjustment to camp. Even if your child has a difficult time adjusting to camp, it does not mean that you have failed to create an independent child. It may be difficult to understand how hard your child finds the first few days at camp. At times, it's almost as if your child believes that he or she will never see you again. Put your child's reaction into context. She may not be looking for a logical response from you, rather, what she wants is comfort and reassurance.

Anxiety can cause the least rational reactions in children as well as adults. Homesickness is a temporary feeling that can over come with adult support. The benefits of overcomes homesickness are enormous It increases self-confidence and self esteem. Don't give up when you get that letter saying come pick me up I hate it here. Instead call the camp director and discuss how they might be able to help your child

Is it ever right to say that it isn't working and bring your child home? Sure, but you must make this decision with a great deal of thought and awareness of the long-term consequences. Campers who come home before the end of their stay often feel like failures. However, sometimes, even with the best of intentions and efforts on the parts of the parents and staff, a child is just not ready for camp or it's just not a good fit. If, after a real trial (a week is not to long), and the best efforts between home and camp your child is clearly not adjusting, it's time to bring the camper home.

Should you make the decision to go get your child, try and work it out with the camp director. Feelings of failure may arise so you need to support your child. Save the evaluation for a week or so after camp, when you sort out what went went wrong with the experience. Help your child to understand that even though the camp experience was disappointing, he is not a failure because things were learned. Assure let your child confidence in him and a different program may be better in the future.

With our busy lives sometimes the only time we can really spend with each other as a family is the weekend. Camping is one of the best ways to really get some time together with your family. Not all knives sold as Bowie knives really meet the standards for this legendary weapon and tool. There are distinguishing characteristics that make this knife what it is and which give it its characteristic durability, utility and, when necessary, lethality. This knife design is born of the American Frontier when people needed tools that were as versatile and durable as possible.

Bowie knives always have clipped points. This feature is the end part of the blade where the center of the blade dips below the spine. Though this feature is attractive, it offers far more than looks. In a fight, this narrow portion of the blade is lethal in its ability to penetrate deep into the body with little effort. This creates what is called a false edge along the back of the blade. Some users sharpen this edge. Outside of fighting, however, this modification has little practical usage and may make the knife more dangerous to the user.

Unlike most hunting knives, a Bowie knife has a wide and angled hand guard. This is also principally designed for its utility when fighting. The hand guard can deflect other weapons away from the user's hands-hands and arms are major targets in knife fights-and also prevents the user's hand from sliding up the blade if it meets heavy resistance from a thrust. As much as a Bowie is a tool of the frontier, it is also a weapon of war and its namesake owner was legendary for his skill with this particular weapon.

The Bowie knife always has a single edge. This is where it really blends a tool with a weapon. For obvious reasons, double-edges are preferred on many fighting knives. The single edge on a Bowie makes it more practical for the user and lends strength to the blade. The blade is also very thick and wide. In a camping situation, this makes it ideal for chopping and hacking.

Bowie knives are useful tools but, in many jurisdictions, they are illegal to carry. These knives, after all, are weapons and are designed to be lethal. The Creation Stage

Using the measuring tape, determine your caravan's length. How big do you want your awning to be? Canvas tarps can be bought in almost any size, but many are maybe nine feet in depth. Do your best to measure what size will be perfect for your use.

If you're over concrete, simply drive your stakes into cracks to avoid damage to the surface.

Move one tent pole's tip into the grommet at a corner of the canvas tarp that is closest to the caravan, being careful to raise the corresponding awning's corner until that tent pole has become vertical. Keep this pole in the right position until a securing line is staked into the ground.

Putting On Your Awning Line

Making an awning line isn't complicated -- use fifteen feet of your nylon rope and, at one end, make a loop and knot it tightly so it will remain at the appropriate side of the canvas. Be careful to use this loop to throw it over the highest point of your vertical pole, which should enable you to secure the other end with a stake, which will be pushed down into the canvas tarp by that loop. Be sure that your loose end rope is always hammered down with a stake.

Finishing Your Remaining Materials

This step simply involves using your last five tent poles to connect to the corresponding grommets. When all is said and done, you should have three awning poles for the front and rear.

Keeping Your Awning Safe

Last but not least, spray your canvas tarp with your Scotchguard. Make sure you give your caravan porch awning three hours to dry, and then apply a second coat. When it is finally all dry, your awning should be perfectly waterproofed for years. When you've finished using it, take the awning apart and store somewhere cool and dry. - 29761

What did the first versions look like?

For instance, you'll find knives from the Rambo movies that are derivatives of the Bowie knife, but feature a serrated back (spine). You'll find "Bowie" style machetes, as well. The real determining factor in the equation is your own personal tastes. For instance, if you are a purist, then the Rambo and Predator editions are certainly out of the running for true Bowie status.

Air travel has certainly become more troublesome since 9/11. However, most travelers would agree that the new restrictions are not without cause. That said, understanding these new restrictions can be a bit problematic. For instance, are you allowed to carry a bowie knife aboard a plane? You might be surprised by the answer to that question - yes, you can. However, you'll have to follow some special rules setup by the TSA to maintain safety aboard planes.

The answer to that question is "yes and no." How can that be? First, you have to understand the difference between carryon and checked baggage. For instance, any carryon bag must be sent through a metal detector, before you are allowed to board a plane with it. In addition, any item within that bag will be within easy reach during the flight. Therefore, you cannot carry your bowie knife in your carryon luggage.

Next, you will need to pack your knife appropriately. You would think that just placing it in your suitcase would be enough, but the TSA demands more stringent measures. You'll need to make sure that your bowie knife is sheathed, first and foremost. You will also need to make sure that the knife is secured within the sheath in some way. Some sheaths have a buttoned strap for this purpose. However, even a simple piece of twine can serve your purpose here.

However, before you head out the door with that knife strapped you should know whether or not you can actually carry it. Why wouldn't you be able to carry your knife in public? As surprising as it might be, there are numerous states that will not allow you to carry that knife, whether it is sheathed, or unsheathed, concealed or unconcealed. How do you know?

As an example of the laws governing knife carry in the US, let's look at the state of Colorado. This state allows pocketknives to be carried both openly and concealed, so long as they have a blade shorter than 3 and 1/2 inches in length. They also allow fixed blade knifes and dirks/daggers, so long as the blade is shorter than 3 and 1/2 inches. Of course, your Bowie knife is likely a bit longer than this, as the blade should be at least 6 inches long to qualify as a Bowie. Therefore, you cannot carry your Bowie knife in public within Colorado, whether concealed or in the open.

The state of Delaware on the other hand, allows the carrying of fixed blade knives such as Bowie knives, dirks and daggers, so long as they are in plain sight. If they are concealed, you must have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. However, Delaware does prohibit the use of balisongs or automatic knives whether concealed or unconcealed.

As you can see, the laws governing Bowie knives in the public view vary considerably throughout the US. Your state's website can be the most valuable resource to which you have access. You should also consider contacting your local police department or sheriff's department, as they can provide you with information.

Remember, though, it is illegal to carry any sort of weapons into a school, into a bar or club, or into a courthouse. Of course, there are other areas where carrying a weapon is prohibited, but these usually vary by state law, as well. - 29761

Spyderco Endura C10 Black Knife: Spyderco does not make a lot of black coated knives in regular runs like most of the big companies out there, and instead released them in small numbers for certain models only. Usualy only a few models are available in black at a time such as the Paramilitary, Native and Delica models. Even with their size,Spyderco has a grassroots feel to it because owner Sal Glasser is still very involved in the knife community.

Spyderco Merlin Knife C21/C08: Yet another Spyderco, same FRN construction, though this Merlin here is a bit of a rarer knife. The Merlin is basically an FRN version of the Harpy, with slight differences in blade steel, shape and thickness. This Spyderco Merlin is a plain edge model, which is extremely rare as they are no longer made.

Peter Marker Micro Damascus Folder: Here is another remarkably well-made folder from Australia's Peter Marker. Unfortunately Peter is no longer making knives as far as I know, but his legacy lives on through the many knives he made during his career. My favourite thing about Peter's knives were that they were always Damascus, and always affordable. He was the only maker that would sell a perfectly made damascus folder for $350.

Spyderco Cricket FRN C29 Knife: Since I reviewed the Ying Yang cricket I wasn't going to review this FRN cricket, however this one is plain edged, and different enough I figured I would at least give a short review of it. The Cricket is definately one of the more popular ladies knives available, and due to the blade shape, works very well with textiles.

William Henry S07 Evolution G-10 Knife: The Evolution series of knives from William Henry are entry level luxury utility folders with a bit of tactical flair, with the shadow-boxed handles and G-10 handle material. The frames are stainless steel, and the William Henry logo is set in a globe, indicating it's overseas origin. In the case of these Evolution folders, production took place in Japan. Not too shabby.

Sharpening a Bowie knife is much the same as sharpening any other knife. However, you will need to know how to go about the process in order to achieve optimal results. What process should you follow? Actually, you will have some choices to make before you even get started with the sharpening process. What is your first decision? First, you will need to determine what sort of sharpening system you want to use. Do you want to use a system that offers you edge guides? On the other hand, you might prefer to use a simple whetstone and control the angle of the edge yourself. This is an important consideration and should not be rushed.

However, because Bowie knives are quite large, you might find that many of the all-in-one sharpening systems are not ideal for use. In fact, your knife might not even fit the slots of these gadgets. That said, you can find all-in-one solutions for larger blades, you just have to look a little harder.

The process of sharpening a knife is all about removing metal from the blade, but doing so in a controlled pattern. The angle at which you hold your knife will determine some of how much metal is removed, as will the duration of the sharpening process. If you choose to use a sharpening system, make sure that it offers several different angles in the guide, so that you can achieve the sharpness and blade shape that's right for your knife.

An incredible diversity of knives can be found on the market today, as well as in the annals of history. You'll find that almost every culture around the world has some sort of knife style that is indicative of their culture and history. For instance, the kukri knife is unmistakable, while the Scottish dirk is synonymous with their history. In America, few knives can claim this particular status, though the Bowie knife might be the closest thing to it. What is a Bowie knife?

First, unlike many other types of knives in the world, the Bowie knife is a single edged implement. Any knife with two sharpened edges is immediately disqualified from consideration. In addition, the blade is at least six inches in length, though they are often quite a bit longer than this, particularly in the case of modern day reproductions. The blade of a Bowie knife is usually at least an inch in width, though these can be up to two inches wide, as well (longer blades are proportionately wider).

What makes a knife a Bowie knife, though? Most people today will find that only the last version of this famed knife is usually labeled under that particular moniker. Generally, these knives have a blade length of at least six inches, though longer blades are available, as well. Bowie knives also usually have an upper guard, that is bent forward. This was used to catch and deflect an opponent's knife during a fight.

One of the most notable features of these knives is the clipped point. While most knives feature a point that is directly in line with the spine of the blade, Bowie knives have a point that is lower than the spine. This offers several benefits. First, it provides the knife with better penetrative abilities. In a knife fight, for instance, the Bowie is much better at penetrating an opponent's flesh than traditional knife models are, thanks to the unique design of the blade's tip.

These are only three of the features that define Bowie knives. Of course, the single edge of the blade is yet another defining characteristic, as is the Spanish Notch that many of these blades feature. Yet another feature is the upward sweeping curve of the blade tip, designed to provide better performance and handling when butchering or skinning a carcass. If your knife has these characteristics, it is a good bet that you are holding a Bowie knife, or a derivative of that famed knife style. Surefire Alpha Folding Knife: I received this Surefire knife in a trade recently and really liked it. I have to admit I've been wanting one of these for a very long time, but at the price figured that that I'd be better off with another knife since they are pricey knives. Finally decided to pull the trigger since they are such a cool knife and the offer was appealing to me.

James McGowan Kiridashi Knife: I bought this knife of James' table at the CKG show a couple of years ago. I love his little kiridashi's and japanese inspired one-off's that he tends to make a lot of for the show. Not perfect as far as fit and finish, but at the lowly price of $60 with a Kydex Sheath, how can one resist?

Tom Anderson Damascus Valkyrie Knife: Tom Anderson, like Gil Hibben, sold his designs to entry level budget knife companies which may have reduced his popularity among some knife collectors, but like Hibben, his custom work is no less impressive. Tom's knives are top notch and his designs are very unique.

Peter Marzitelli Raizer Folding Knife: Peter is the first knifemaker from Canada that I was aware of. I remember seeing his ads in magazines, and then when I found out he lived in Langley, BC, I was very interested in getting one of his knives! Unfortunately, it took several years before I was able to get one of his custom peices.

Microtech Greenfly Butterfly Knife: When I first saw the Microtech Dragonfly I really liked it, so when I saw the Greenfly I had to get it. It was a cheaper alternative to the Tachyon that came out earlier, with an aluminum handle instead of Titanium. Microtech excels at machined aluminum handles so I think this model fits with their brand better anyway.

Spyderco Jot Singh Khalsa C40 Knife: I actually owned both the serrated and plain edged versions of this knife, and both are excellent examples of classic discontinued Spyderco designs. I remember reading an article by Massad Ayoob about how the Jot Singh Khalsa was his favourite self-defenseknife to carry on airplanes prior to'/11 because it fit the under 3 rule at the time.

Kirby Lambert Mini-Tac Damascus Knife: This was my very first Kirby Lambert knife, and is an awesome peice. I love it and will likely never sell it, since it is very dear to me. It is not only my first Kirby Lambert knife, but the first fully custom knife I ever ordered, and the first of many I have purchased from Kirby. He is now my favourite knife maker!

Klotzli Michael Walker KL500 Knife: I purchased this knife from the late Robert Bartoli of Brightedge. Bob was a good guy, but had one of those personalities that some people in the kinfe world couldn't stand. I personally liked the guy a lot, and bought quite a few knives from him. I think I bought a few lights from him too. One of the best deals I got was this guy for $40, which I ended up flipping on ebay for over $100 a couple years later. - 29761

John Barker Custom Hawksbill Knife: Thank you John Barker and Ron and everyone else at Jerzeedevil.com that helped with this raffle. All I did was send Ron some cash to cover his costs and to help out with the shipping of raffle prizes, and I got this cool Custom One-off by John Barker. John does some really nice grinding with these, and the Busse-style hole in the guard deal is sweet.

Frank Niro Eggerling Damascus Knife: Another Beautiful carved folder by knife artist Frank Niro. Niro's work is not well known, but he has a very devout band of followers that buys a lot of his knives, and they all sell. If you ever handle his work you will see why, as there are not many makers out there that will sell this quality of work for anything even close to what he asks for price-wise.

Microtech Dragonfly Butterfly Knife: This is one of two Microtech Dragonflies I have owned, with the beautifully milled Aluminum handles and smooth stonewashed blade. This one was made during the period when 154CM was unreliable and has the---4CrMo steel blade. This specimen has the combo edged blade, which in my opinion is less desirable, however sometimes you can't be picky when there's a sale!

Darren Chard Damascus Ranger Knife: This is the first knife I bought from Darren, and started me on my road to collecting his knives. Darren was a member of the CKG at the time and I had found out about him on the CKG website. I remember feeling that his prices were very reasonable and that his work looked great. I've said this once and I'll say it again:Darren is a perfectionist, and his work reflects that!

Mike Irie Pearl and Damascus Knife: I'd been eyeing Mike Irie's stuff for quite a while before I saw this little Pearl gent's knife and had to have it. The price was good, especially for a Mother or Pearl and Damascus folder from a recognized maker. I just couldn't pass it up! Mike Irie does very nice work and this folder is a good example of it. He's probably more famous for his fixed blades, however.

Allen Elishewitz Omega Folder Knife: My first Allen Elishewitz custom folder was this Omega folder after wanting one of his folders for as long as I could remember, I finally got one. AllenElishewitz was a legend in my mind, with all his collaborations with Benchmade in the beginning, when collaborations weren't as common as they are now. His designs really struck me as beautiful and functional.

Burchtree Knifeworks Bamboo Folder Knife: Michael Burch makes some of the nicest folders out there in my humble opinion. I have been a fan of his Asian-influenced folders since I first laid eyes on them about a year ago. I asked to be placed on the list for a Bamboo folder several months ago my guess would be about 6 months ago, and I just got an email back saying one was ready!

Spyderco Howard Viele C42 Knife: The Viele C42 from Spyderco is definately what I would consider a Classic Spydie. Produced in relatively small numbers and with very high end parts for the time, the Viele was also reissued with higher end steel later, of which this is an example. I had one of the originals in AUS-8 Steel, with the Micarta slab on the back. The new one has Aluminum on the backside. I have long since sold the originalViele and now just own the new one. - 29761
